Kathmandu: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has affirmed Nepal's commitment to prioritize compensation for communities most vulnerable to climate change impacts in the country. The Prime Minister announced that Nepal would advocate for this agenda at the upcoming UN climate event, COP28.

PM Dahal highlighted that indigenous communities, women, and children are disproportionately affected by the adverse effects of climate change in Nepal. He emphasized that international assistance and grants received would be directed towards addressing the needs of these vulnerable groups.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Sathsathai Foundation, PM Dahal received a memorandum from Foundation Chairperson Prajita Karki, reminding him to ensure compensation for the most affected communities. The Foundation plans to organize two events in the Nepal pavilion during COP28.

Foreign Minister NP Saud mentioned that Nepal is pleased to welcome the Princess of Qatar as a guest at a program in Nepal's pavilion. Coordination between Nepali Embassies in Doha, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, UAE, will facilitate the participation of the Qatari Princess.

The memorandum presented to PM Dahal highlighted the increased snowmelt in mountains and the potential risks of glacial lake outbursts due to climate change. It emphasized the need for Nepal to advocate strongly for climate justice in international forums, considering the severe impact of climate change on the livelihoods, health, education, and employment of local communities.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Saud, Climate Advisor to the Prime Minister and Foundation Chair, Prajita Karki, Vice-Chairperson of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality Tasi Lhamu Sherpa, and other officials.
